Mankato Clinic Launches Diabetes Care Center

MANKATO (November 5, 2020) — Mankato Clinic has launched the Diabetes Care Center in the Main Street location to offer comprehensive care for type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes to help people of all ages successfully manage this condition, prevent complications and lead a healthy life.

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 34.2 million American adults have diabetes and in the last 20 years the number of adults diagnosed with diabetes has more than doubled.

Locally, the Mankato Clinic Diabetes Care Center can make a difference for people with diabetes in our region. Led by endocrinologist Abel Alfonso, DO, the Diabetes Care Center team includes pediatrician Robert Larson, MD; certified diabetes care and education specialist Abby Tibodeau, RD, LD, CDCES; Ashley Forstner, RN, BSN; and clinical pharmacist Nathan Evers, PharmD, BCACP.

“Working together with our diabetes care team and our patients’ primary care providers, we can provide individualized treatment, support, education and specialty care to help people successfully manage this condition. We are here to help our patients control their blood sugar and prevent complications that can impact their quality of life,” Dr. Alfonso said. “We treat the whole person, not the condition.”

The Diabetes Care Center offers a diabetes education program recognized by the American Diabetes Association. Patients work one-on-one with a certified diabetes educator to customize a treatment plan that can address nutrition, physical activity, lifestyle changes, glucose monitoring, medication and insulin pump education. A clinical pharmacist is also available to help patients with medications, insulin and monitoring.

Diabetes Care Center services are available with a referral from a primary care provider. People are advised to talk with their primary care provider to see if the Diabetes Care Center is the right fit.
