Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear medicine is a branch of medical imaging that uses small amounts of radioactive material to diagnose, determine the severity of, or treat a variety of diseases. Nuclear medicine offers several benefits:

• Nuclear medicine procedures can pinpoint molecular activity within the body to identify disease in its earliest stages. Early detection allows a disease to be treated sooner when treatment tends to be more successful.
• Nuclear medicine procedures allow specialists to gain medical information that would normally require surgery, or more expensive and invasive diagnostic tests.

Patients are referred to the Nuclear Medicine department by their primary or specialty healthcare providers.
