FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: For more information on this news advisory, contact Mankato Clinic Public Relations Director Katie Nerem Roth at 389-8770 or 327-8112.

Becky Joecks, Mankato Clinic breast health nurse, has been named 2005 Nurse of the Year. Joecks, who was selected by the Minnesota Fifth District Nurses Association, was among over 70 nurses nominated for the award in the Greater Mankato region.

According to the people she works with, Becky showed great initiative in her major role of creating a Womenís Breast Health Clinic in April of 2004 at the Mankato Clinic. According to Mankato Clinic Radiology Director Nancy Pfeifer, Becky created a model of care for breast health patients that surpasses anything in the region.

Additionally, by creating a Monthly Breast Conference for physicians, pathologists, oncologists, radiation oncologists, mammographers and sonographers, Becky created a team of professionals all working together for the care and treatment of the patient with breast cancer.

According to Pfeifer, the Clinic has received many notes of appreciation and thanks from the patients she serves.

Becky is certified as both an educator and care manager in breast health. She coordinates diagnostic imaging and procedures for women with abnormal mammograms or other breast-related conditions. She also coordinates the clinical, educational and support needs of the patients and their families.

This year marked the first year for the award. The effort was sponsored by KEYC-TV in collaboration with the Thro Company, Mankato Clinic and Minnesota State University College of Allied Health and Nursing.
