A colonoscopy enables your doctor to examine the lining of your colon (large intestine) for abnormalities by inserting a flexible tube into the rectum and colon. This allows the doctor to get a close-up view of the inside of your colon. Any lesions or abnormalities, such as polyps, which are too small to be seen on X-ray, can be removed and biopsied.
